The Policy
DoDI 5000.97 establishes Department of Defense policy for using digital engineering across the life cycle of defense systems. It calls for programs to plan how digital engineering will be used and identifies methods such as MBSE as part of that capability — creating a clear workforce need for people who can understand, build, interpret, and maintain system models.

OMG SysML Model User
Where it is included in the approved program design, SET Academy coursework can prepare students for the OMG SysML Model User certification exam — an industry-recognized SysML credential earned independently of any school or tool vendor.
Who OMG Is
The Object Management Group (OMG) is the international standards body that develops and maintains SysML, the modeling language used across the systems engineering industry.
What Model User Covers
Model User is the entry-level OMG SysML certification. It validates that a candidate can read, navigate, and interpret a SysML model — the diagrams, relationships, and structures used on real engineering programs.
Why It Matters
Because OMG owns the SysML standard, the credential is recognized independently of any school, tool vendor, or employer — giving students a portable, industry-recognized signal of modeling capability.
How the Curriculum Prepares Students
- S1 builds the systems engineering vocabulary the exam assumes.
- M1 covers every SysML diagram type tested on Model User, hands-on in a modeling tool.
- M2 adds the structural and parametric depth behind the harder exam items.
- M3 can include dedicated certification preparation alongside model reviews and reporting.
- CAP1 exercises model reading and interpretation on a real customer project.
Where included in the approved program design, students may receive preparation for the OMG SysML Model User certification exam and an opportunity to sit for that independent industry certification. Completion of SET Academy does not guarantee a passing exam score.
